State Senator Diane Allen (R-7th District) and State Assemblyman Herb Conaway (D-7th District) have co-sponsored a resolution that urges Congress to recognize women’s rights hero and Mount Laurel native Alice Paul.

The resolution, SCR-95, asks Congress to posthumously award a Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to Paul in recognition of her role in the women’s suffrage movement and in advancing equal rights for women.

In a statement released by Allen, she said Paul “has been an inspiration for women throughout the years and remains an outstanding role model for many people to this day.”

The resolution was passed in the Senate on Sept. 15 by a vote of 35-0. The Assembly passed it on May 26 by a vote of 71-0. In Congress, a bill that would authorize the medal for Paul, sponsored by Democratic U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, was assigned to a congressional committee on Aug. 5.
